Station Casinos in Process of Launching Sports Betting App
November 22, 2012

Station Casinos has launched into a campaign to market its brand new application for betting sports on mobile devices, in anticipation of its ultimate release on October 31.

The app, called Sports Connection Mobile, is in field trials and has to be tested by the Nevada Gaming Control Board, but there are no problems expected with it being passed.

The app is currently in soft launch, and is going off without a lot of fanfare. There are bonus offers that were sent out in a mailer. These include $100 in free play for any of its "Boarding Pass" club members if they sign up for the app at a Station property, and 10% rebate - up to $50 - coming back to the player on the total amount of wagers.

Customers are going to be able to use the app to make straight bets, parlays, teasers and propositions. The minimum wager is just $5, and those bets will only be valid in the state of Nevada. If a customer is beyond the legal jurisdiction, he or she will be notified of that through the system, and the wager will not go through.

The Sports Connection app will be available right away for iPhones, Android phones and tablets. Later on it will be available for iPads. There is some thought being given to making it available for Blackberry phones as well.

Sprint is seemingly making an enticing offer in conjunction with Station casinos, because the company is offering Nevada customers who have Sports Connection Mobile 10% off on their monthly bill.

Station is not the first company that is offering a sports betting app. William Hill, the famous British bookmaker, recently acquired a company called American Wagering, which developed an application for Leroy's in Nevada two years ago. Cantor Gaming, which has seven sportsbooks currently operating in the state, also has a sports wagering app.

Station Casinos has 17 different sportsbooks in Nevada. The company is owned by the Fertitta family, and Lorenzo Fertitta is also well-known as the owner of the Ultimate Fighting Championships (UFC), which conducts mixed martial arts events on pay per view television.

Poker Executive Cops Plea
November 17, 2012

One of the executives who worked at Full Tilt Poker and Poker Stars has put forth a guilty plea in response to charges that he played a major role in a scheme to hide money to get around the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA).

Nelson Burtnick headed up the payment processing department at both of those poker giants, so he is right in the middle of the fracas. And he was one of eleven people who were charged in connection with what was going on at both places.

Burtnick admitted that third-party payment processors were used to facilitate transactions so that they would be disguised as something else and therefore go unnoticed by the U.S. banks they were routing through. In fact, the online merchants that were supposed to be represented by the identification of the transactions did not exist at all.

The UIGEA was passed as a rider onto the Safe Port Security Act, pushed by Senator Bill Frist of Tennessee, who shortly thereafter left public service.

The charges against Burtnick specifically are conspiracy (one count) and two counts of accepting funds in connection with unlawful Internet gambling. It is possible he could get five years on each of the counts. However, he is also cooperating with the prosecution, which means others will go down on the basis of his testimony.

Poker Stars faced a whole slew of charges related to money laundering and bank fraud, and had to pay $547 million to the U.S. Department of Justice. They acquired the assets of Full Tilt Poker and had to compensate players who were customers of both organizations to the tune of $184 million.

It is important to note that with the settlement with U.S. authorities, there was no official admission of guilt. It has been the position of Poker Stars all along that there is nothing illegal about conducting online poker.

They may yet get their day in court on that issue, but for now they are going to have to deal in the current court situation, and on that one they are not exactly holding an Ace in the hole.
