POLICE DENY CONSPIRING YOGYAKARTA ARRESTS

Jakarta, 29/3/2007 (Kominfo-Newsroom) – Police regretted allegations that the arrest of  five  people suspected of working for terrorists headed by  Abu Dujana (20/3) was of a police conspiracy.

“It is regrettable if people were of the view that the arrests are the doing of the police. Terrorism is a trans-national crime the deveopment of which is always monitored by the international word,” Police Inspector General Sisno Adiwinoto, chief of the Public Relations Division at the Police Headquarters here Wednesday (28/3).

On the contrary, Adiwinoto said that as a matter of fact people have to thank and appreciate the police for arresting  five terrorist suspects and confiscating  active bombs and other explosives before they explode.

“To date, special police team Tim Densus 88)  has been able to nab suspects only after a bombing has taken place.

But now five suspects have been apprehended before an act of terrorism  occurs and this is a blessing,” he said.

He added that the arrests  were in compliance with existing procedures and that there is sufficient evidence that the suspects work for a terrorist network.

“We have been been monitoring them for quite a while and we have their names. We arrested them because they could face trial. Police seized fire arms and explosives in Sukohardjo, Central Java, on Wednesday (21/30).
Adiwinoto hoped that in the future there will be legislation that allows police to arrest someone from the moment he is known to be a member of a suspected terrorist network. (T. SA/toeb/c/kho/ton)
