INDONESIA NEEDS NO MUFTI COUNCIL

Jakarta, 23/10/2007 (Kominfo-Newsroom)—The suggestion that government designing a mufti council that has high authority to give advice in religious matters like it is in the Middle East is rejected by Chairman of Indonesian Ulama Council, Ma’ruf Amien.

The Mufti Council is unneeded in Indonesia since it has been represented by fatwa commission under the Indonesia Ulama Council, said Ma’ruf to newsmen here Tuesday (23/10).

“I disagree with the suggestion since the mufti council should be headed by a man called mujtahid mutlaq whose Islamic knowledge should be as good as the well-known Imam Syafi’I,” he said.

The man who has such qualification is nobody at this time. Therefore, generally clergies doing an ijtihad together.

Besides, if compared to the Indonesian Ulama Council, the Mufti Council is left by far. The Mufti Council is an institution under the government while Indonesian Ulama Council is an independent institution and it is the representative of Islamic organizations.
Moreover, the fatwa (advice in religious matters) of Indonesian Ulama Council is often used as guidance and sources by government, business world and the whole mass of community since it is reliable and proven credible. (T. ban/id/kho)
